The Only Way Is Up

Join us for an incredible once-in-a-lifetime journey to Mount Toubkal, the highest peak in both the Atlas Mountains and North Africa. As we climb 4,167 metres or 13,671ft to the summit, we will enjoy breathtaking scenery, passing historic shrines, remote Berber settlements and various pain thresholds along the way! After our adventure, we will take time to explore the beautiful city of Marrakech and it wouldn’t be a Smiling Grape Adventure Tour without a Moroccan wine and beer tasting…

Day 1 - Marrakech- Imlil (1740m)

We start with a 2 hour drive from Marrakech airport to the small village of Imlil. We will stay overnight in a traditional Imlil Guesthouse. There will be a very short briefing before you start counting sheep.
Lunch at Imlil

Day 2 - Imlil- Neltner Refuge (3207m)

After breakfast we meet our guides and mules. Once we’ve finished a short briefing and loading our kit, we’ll set off for a seven hour hike to base camp - a small refuge below the summit. This is a baptism of fire for some, as the track is quite steep and narrow in places, but the views are amazing.
We will climb over several mountain passes to reach Neltner Refuge where we will experience our guides exceptional cooking for the first time. Once we’re all suitably stuffed we will get our heads down for the night. We will be sleeping in the refuge.
Breakfast, lunch and dinne

Day 3 - Neltner Refuge- Toubkal Summit (4167m)- Neltner Refuge

We wake up early to the smell of breakfast and, after taking on some food and caffeine, we set off.
We will take it slow on the ascent as some of us will be feeling the effects of altitude and we want to ensure that everyone makes it to the summit. The track twists and turns as we hike for a few hours to the summit. Make sure your camera battery has lasted till now as the views are breathtaking. The feeling of achievement coupled with the amazing scenery makes this a fantastic part of the trip.
Once everyone has taken in the view we will head back down to Neltner Refuge for a well earned meal and a nice hot cuppa! We will be sleeping like logs in the refuge.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Day 4 - Neltner Refuge- Imlil (1740m)

Our last day on the mountain sees us descend from base camp through the holy hamlet of Sidi Chamharoush (2310m) and back into Imlil. We will have a picnic lunch en route before returning to the local Guesthouse for Moroccan whiskey - it’s time to celebrate! (And before you get too excited about the whiskey, it's actually Moroccan tea with mint!)
Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Day 5 - Imlil- Marrakech

Private bus takes us from Imlil back to Marrakech. There we will stay in a local Guesthouse/Hotel. We can then explore the beauty of Marrakech, hustling bustling markets, hot tub parlours, relaxing cafes, bars, taking in the wonder of Morocco. We will also be holding tastings of local wine and beer before hitting the local nightclub!
Breakfast.

Day 6 - Return Home

We bid a fond farewell to our new Moroccan friends, reminiscing our wonderful trip and looking forward to the next Smiling Grape adventure!
